Debatable Decisions SPL – Week 5

Another week and bizarrely another round of correct calls from the referee of the SPL, well done them. Worth noting, though, that Week Five sees quite a few decisions marked as correct because our judges couldn’t be separated on whether or not the referee had got it right, in which case we give them the benefit of the doubt. Just goes to show how difficult it is to get any sort of consensus on decisions even with the aid of video replays.

Motherwell – Inverness CT

Possible Last Man Tackle and Red

Gary – I think the ref called this one wrong. I paused it a couple of times and the Inverness attacker gets his leg just in front of the Motherwell’s defenders foot before he goes for the ball, which then results in the Motherwell defender kicking the Inverness attacker, should have been a free-kick. His momentum would have then took him ahead and it was then last man so should have been a red for me.

Mike – It looks like Foran ran right across the defender, so I’m not even sure it was a foul. If it was I still wouldn’t have given a red card as there was another defender right on top of the incident.

Paul – I think the referee has got this one wrong, I think a free-kick should have been given but I don’t think it is a red card offence as there is another defender and Foran didn’t have the ball under his control.

Robert – Correct decision by the referee on this one. The defender followed the ball all the way and didn’t know Foran was coming round. Would have been fairly harsh if the call was made the opposite way.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

ICT Penalty

Gary – Yeah correct decision I know it’s not the way it should be awarded but you can normally tell by players reaction, but it doesn’t matter as it was a penalty.

Mike – That seemed clear enough. There was just enough contact to take the lad down.

Paul – 100% penalty, Foran on the receiving end again and the correct decision was made.

Robert – No doubt, the attacker was clearly caught. Correct.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

Hearts – Dundee

Dundee Penalty

Gary – Yeah it was the right call, Zaliukas just grabbed the back of him and the ref was in the correct position to call it.

Mike – Not a penalty for me. Watched it 5 or six times and I really can’t see the shirt pull.

Paul – Hard to judge but I think that there is just enough contact to give this, you can see the Hearts Captain pull Nish back and again a correct decision.

Robert – Very hard to say. Judging by the positioning of the ref I’ll side with his decision.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

Hearts Penalty

Gary – Yeah the player grabbed his hand as he goes past him doesn’t he. The ref has the whistle right to his mouth when he sees it.

Mike – Opposite of the previous one. Clear pull on the attackers arm.

Paul – Similar offence to the Dundee one and the referee has to give it again. Correct decision.

Robert – Definite penalty. The ref got this right too.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

St Johnstone – Dundee Utd

St Johnstone Penalty Shout #1

Gary – Not for me, they were both at it, arm in arm and the ref had a good look at it, as did the linesman. I believe they both made the right decision.

Mike – Seems a penalty for me. Dillon had his arm locked into Tade’s which stopped the forward reaching the ball.

Paul – I think the referee has got this one correct, it’s a 50/50 battle and both had a claim for a foul but correct in my eyes.

Robert – Wrong decision. Dillon was all over Tadé and certainly seems to have impeded him.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

Dundee United Penalty Shout

Gary – Yeah his hand is up there, and it really shouldn’t be. If he doesn’t have his hand there then the Dundee Untied boy has his head on it.

Mike – Can’t tell if he touches it with his hands. He leaps with the up, which is dangerous in terms of potential penalties being given, but he brings them back down. Going to go with the officials.

Paul – That’s a stonewall penalty if ever I saw one. Massive mistake by the referee there.

Robert – Davidson’s hand is raised but it is very hard to tell on the replay’s therefore, I’ll need to say it was the correct decision.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

Anderson Possible Red (yellow awarded)

Gary – Nope I agree with the ref, I think it would be harsh to hand him a red card, yellow seemed the right call.

Mike – Yellow was right. Clear intent to get the ball. He didn’t go in high and although his studs were showing I’m not sure anyone could make that challenge without showing some stud.

Paul – Hands are raised but the correct call for me.

Robert – Seems fairly innocuous, right under the ref’s nose too. Correct decision.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

St Johnstone Penalty Shout #2

Gary – That was hilarious, he’s nowhere near him and he just trips over his own feet. It’s laughable.

Mike – Should be signed up for his counties next Olympic squad. A shoe-in for gold in the 10m diving.

Paul – That’s one of best dives I’ve seen in a long while. I’ve seen them given where the referee has been conned (Eduardo v Celtic in the CL) but correct decision this time.

Robert – The ref was correct, never a penalty. In fact, surprised Tade wasn’t cautioned.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision

Ross County – Kilmarnock

Killie Penalty Shout

Gary – 1. It’s ‘just’ outside the box. 2. It’s a foul I think, he just clips him, but as I said just outside the box for me. So Correct decision with penalty, incorrect for the free-kick/foul.

Mike – It was correct not to give a penalty but only because the tackle was outside the box. Incorrect not to give anything as it should have been a free kick.

Robert – Incorrect. Looks to me like the defenders right leg clips McKenzie.

Overall Verdict – Correct Decision
